The Theory Test
Before applying for the Practical Test students are required to pass the Theory Test. This is split into two sections, both of which must be passed at the same time. Both sections are computer based.
The first section consists of 50 multiple choice questions based on the Highway Code and other driving matters. Students have 57 minutes to complete the test and must achieve 43/50 to pass.
The second section is a Hazard Perception Test. Whilst watching a series of 14 video clips students must indicate, via the click of the mouse, that they have spotted a developing hazard. The pass mark for this section is 44/75.
The Practical Test
The Practical Test lasts approximately 40 minutes and involves driving on a variety of road types.
Having checked the driving licence the examiner will ask the student to read a number plate. You must be able to read a UK number plate from a distance of 20.5 metres. The examiner will then ask two of the Vehicle Check (Show Me, Tell Me) Questions.
During the drive students will be asked to complete one reverse manoeuvre - either a turn in the road, a left reverse, a reverse (parallel) park or a bay park. Students may also be asked to complete an emergency (controlled) stop.
At some point during the test the examiner will ask the student to complete the Independent Driving section. This lasts approx. 8 minutes and involves the student driving to a given destination either by following direction signs or by use of a diagram.
